Devotion:
When someone is trying to explain the truth to you in as simple terms as they can it often just goes straight over your head because you are trying to find the hardest and most complicated solution rather than looking at the obvious. For us to read through these words and know the answer, we think of them as a simple and straight forward explanation; yet the people listening could not see the answer because they wanted their answer to conform to their own ideals. I can remember sitting in a maths class as the maths teacher got more and more frustrated trying to explain a seemingly simple theorem to us... it took us quite a while before we clicked and saw the obvious answer!
When we have built up the beginnings of a theorem or belief in the way that we think it ought to be, it is hard to let go that which we have constructed and to lay hold of the actual solution. We may have spent a long time getting to the position that we are at and the thought of giving that up does not go down well. We expect to have to go through much in order to get to any solution and so when someone comes forward with a seemingly simple solution, we reject it!
God is not trying to give us the most complicated way that He can find of getting us to heaven. He has given us a perfect and simple solution whereby we can know the truth but in order to know that truth, we may well have to let go of our past... The only bad part for us is that we have to admit that we are actually wrong and that what we have built up around ourselves is just that – something that we have built up. We need to release our baggage and take a firm grasp of God’s Word because we know it to be the truth through example. Don’t get bogged down with your own theories...
Points to Ponder:
Are you struggling with God’s Word?
Are you still holding on to your own ideals?
