Thursday Reading: Job 26:5-14

8 He binds up the waters in His thick clouds; and the cloud is not torn under them.
Devotion:
There are many places in our bibles that attempt to describe the power of God and many that simply describe what God has done and leave the wondering up to us. This passage in Job brings a few things down to earth; Job was bantering with his friends as to why God had allowed Job to be in such a distressed state and each had their own theories about what had happened and why. Job had an answer to each of the theories raised because he always held God above everything – even when he was sure that it was God who had allowed him to be broken and torn!
Have you ever tried to load as much water as you can into a balloon? You can normally continue to pour water in way past the point at which you are sure that this rubber should break so long as you are not pricking it with anything sharp. The amount of water that is help is amazing. When the balloon does break you get to see just how much water was in it because it goes absolutely everywhere. The next time you see rain have a little think about the amount of water that is being held up in that cloud – especially in a thunderstorm. Even though it will make such a mess, going absolutely everywhere, we can also watch a cloud drift slowly and menacingly past without leaking!
When we say that God is all powerful we don’t often equate that power to simple physical things. Should we? Well yes because it brings to mind just how awesome God actually is. But what we must never forget is that we can add all of these physical things together over and over again until we are totally confused and then know that that is just one tiny part of what God is actually doing right now! It is quite something to balance a ball on the end of your finger, but something else to balance a living earth in the middle of space!
