Wednesday Reading: Ephesians 5:18-21
Key Verse: Ephesians 5:19
19 speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;
Devotion:
How often do you wander along with a song in your heart or mind? How often is that song a song of praise to God? There are so many catchy songs or tunes that we come across that it is of little wonder that we do have songs in our heads for some of the day but what sort of song that it is is going to depend on where your mind is. We are surrounded by so many songs nowadays that we have to be able to filter out many of them simply because of their content or meaning; we automatically filter out songs that we do not like but that does not mean that we ignore them... If we hear a particular song several times then we are likely to have that song in our minds no matter what the content or meaning.
We can control where we are so that what we are exposed to is to our liking. That is something we do all the time; we seek out places or media stations that will supply us with the music, songs and events that we like. If we do not control where we are then we have to put up with the environment that we find ourselves in... and those are the songs that we will end up having running through our minds...
It is very easy to get carried away with our environments and to enjoy in excess that which is around us. When we do that we often find that we exclude others because we get carried away with our own enjoyment and do not think about those around us. Music is just one of those things that takes us away from the people around us and one which is promoted constantly with the personal media players that we are all encouraged to buy nowadays. That then becomes our own trap that we set because we then fill our ears with the songs that we have, taking our minds away from the things we should be thinking of. The more junk we let into our minds the less we should be surprised that our lives turn toward that junk and away from God. Take a song of praise around with you today to help you think more about God!
Points to Ponder:
What music do you like?
What do you think God thinks of your music choice?
