Friday Reading: Matthew 5:13-16
Key Verse: Matthew 5:16
16 Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in Heaven.
Devotion:
What use is a light bulb that does not work or a candle without a wick or herbs and spices that have no flavour? Yes we could all think of something to do with useless stuff but we would all still agree that it is of little use when compared to the real thing! Each of us has a choice in our life as to whether we want to be like a light bulb that does not work or one that shines forth before all men. The disciples were described as being the salt of the earth meaning that they were the ones bringing that certain savour to the world. The world is a dark place where people shy away from good and God. Without any light people will continue to be trapped in that dark place with no hope; but introduce a little light and that small amount of light will enable many people to see the truth around them.
We don’t have to judge people nor does God want us to do that. But if we can open people’s eyes to the truth and allow them to make up their own minds then we are doing what is right in God’s eyes. If we keep our light to ourselves and do not allow anyone else to use our light to see the world around them then we are working against God because we are keeping Him from the people around us. The best that we can do is to lift up our meagre light on top of a high place so that all may benefit from it. We cannot know the wonders that God can do with a little bit of light in people’s eyes – it may be the only light that they ever get to see...
If we are going to lift up our light for other to see then we have to be sure that what we light up and allow others to see is going to glorify God and not destroy people’s hope! We need to do what we can to make sure that other people see us in the most encouraging way that we can. Don’t worry that you are not good enough because as long as you ask God for help He will be willing and able to let your light shine for His glory – try it, now...
Points to Ponder:
How do you see yourself?
Are you letting God guide you?
