Wednesday Reading: Proverbs 13:1
Key Verse: Proverbs 13:1
1 A wise son heeds his father's instruction, but a scorner does not hear rebuke.
Devotion:
How many times have you said to someone that you agree with them just to keep the peace when you know in your heart that you do not? How many times have you said that you would do something and then gone away knowing that you would not do it? These are just a couple of the ways in which we do not listen to others – we like to come up with more and more ways in which we can make it look like we are listening when in fact we are not. That is the sad truth about our human ways!
It is not just limited to us on a small scale not listening to our parents and teachers but rather on a global scale when governments tell each other they will listen but know that they will go off and do their own thing. Deceit is now a central part of our lives and that scares me! When God told prophet after prophet to remind us of our deceit and to turn away from it He was not just doing it for fun or to complain about, He was doing it for a reason. When we let deceit into our life then we build on it and even try to support our lifestyles with that same deceit. Nothing more than building your house upon dodgy foundations – as soon as anything comes along to try those foundations they will crumble and leave you with nothing.
We need to take heed of all that God is trying to teach us. We need to take heed of all the people that God allows into our lives that are trying to give us His Word. Why else do you think God sends all these strange people into your life if it were not to try and get you to listen? But instead we sit back and complain about the strangers in our lives rather than looking at why God has made things happen this way. We need to stop and focus on what God wants in our lives otherwise we are the ones who will lose focus on Him altogether and when we do that there will be no anchor to stop us from sliding all the way down. Grab hold of your anchor today and listen!
Points to Ponder:
What is your response when someone says no to you?
Are you listening to God’s instructions?
