Devotion:
Have you ever gone through the events that unfolded when Christ was born and thought a bit more deeply about what actually happened? Each year as we get closer to Christmas people of the world look forward to the ‘holiday season’, ‘Santa’, parties, food and what seems to be a very stressful time for many too. Each year, Christians all over the world try to bring Christ back into Christmas to remind people of the true meaning of Christmas. We may have got the date wrong, or people may have changed the date over the years but we must not forget why we celebrate Christmas. So for the next few days I want to pick some small points that we may often overlook and hope that they will remind us all of our Saviour and King, Jesus Christ our Lord.

This is the time of the year when we celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ, born of a virgin, of the lineage of David, born of God, foretold in scriptures and here told to the shepherds. The shepherds were locals who were not terribly well educated but they dedicated their lives to looking after the sheep of their flocks. We can read all manner of things into this but it is not the ‘why’ that I am looking at today but rather the ‘how’. It was not a single person who came rushing out to tell them of the birth of Christ but the angel of The Lord who came to bring them this very important news. Then what followed was something for us all to hear and remember!

“Glory to God in the highest!” The first thing the host of angels sung out was their praise to God in heaven above. That is where we need to hold God, above all, highest, first and only! Praise Him for His unspeakable gift! The next phrase was of peace and good will toward us. The heavens rejoiced that our Saviour was now born. Our road to Salvation had entered the stages when we would no longer have to make our own sacrifices because our own sacrifice was now born to die. Our time of grace had been born and the heavens wanted us to know all about it. So next time you look for a sign... you missed the biggest one by a few thousand years – but we can still read it and apply it every day!
