Wednesday Reading: Deuteronomy 5:16
Key Verse: Deuteronomy 5:16
16 Honour thy father and thy mother, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee; that thy days may be prolonged, and that it may go well with thee, in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.
Devotion:
You didn’t think you could get away with it that easily did you? If I had the space I would write a devotion that would last all week when it comes down to this one Commandment. It is one upon which so much is dependent on and one which follows on from the most important Commandment which reminds us to love and honour God alone! If we are going to listen to that first commandment then we have to listen to every single one because they must be followed if we are going to try to honour Him in any manner!
One of the hardest things to do is to try to change the way that you are and I’m sure that no matter how hard we try to do that alone, we will not succeed for very long. It takes support to be able to make changes and for us to be able to make any changes means that we are going to need support. That support will come from God but should also come from those people around you who love and care for you; the very people that we may well take for granted most of the time. It is not a case of sticking with what you are comfortable with either because none of us would get very far doing nothing!
God has given us families so that we can have support from people no matter what the circumstances. He has started us off in the right manner and continually encourages us to walk in that same manner. So when we are reminded that we need to honour our family members it is because God knows what we need in our lives!
Yes we can run off and have fun. Yes we can run off and do our own thing. Yes we can separate ourselves from others. Yes we can leave our parents to go and set up home with a partner. But that basic truth remains – that we honour our families because they are the ones who will stick by us when things fall down. God has given us love that we may use it wisely. Use it and don’t abuse it!
Points to Ponder:
Can you describe how much others have done for you?
Do you know how much God has done for you?
