Friday Reading: John 3:16-21
Key Verse: John 3:19
19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
Devotion:
When we do allow God to explain things to us through believing in Him and trusting in Him, we find out truths about Him as well as truths about us. Sometimes those truths are just what we need or want to hear, but other times they may well be exactly what we don’t want to hear. Imagine a scene for a minute (without giving some of you too many nightmares); you are in a darkened room watching a flickering TV in the corner, quite content with what is going on because you like the old favourite you are watching – and besides, it’s good and clean. And then someone walks into the room and switches on the light. Suddenly you see the whopping great spider that was silently and slowly walking toward you! Yes I know some of you are not afraid of spiders so that would not work for you… but we could say that we were quite content with being in the dark because we did not have to know what was going on in the dark!
If we are going to live our lives in the darkness like that then we may well be allowing things into our lives that we just don’t think about or don’t see. Whereas if we do switch on the lights, God’s Light specifically, then we may well see all the strange things that we do allow into our lives without even giving them a second glance. God wants us to be aware of what we do allow into our lives! He does not want us to be the ones that find out when it is too late. He is switching on the light in our lives so that we can see what is going on. He is switching on the light so that we know what sort of state we are in right now; and He is doing this because of His love for us!
None of us like to be told that we are doing things wrong or that we have gone astray. None of us like to be reminded of the things we have done wrong in the past. God, on the other hand, wants us to see the state that we are in right now so that we can turn toward and into the light before we get caught out. Jesus came into this world to be that light that will show us the way, not that light that will show everyone else what we do wrong. God wants us to have a personal relationship with Him so that we can realise that we do need Him in our lives all the time. God wants us to see that the Light is good and that it will help us every step of the way. Jesus came into the world as a judge but He came to show us the way forward and not to trap us through our own misgivings. Turn to the light and trust in Him.
Points to Ponder:
Do bumps in the night keep you awake?
Are you fully trusting in God?
