Christmas Day 2012

Christmas Day Reading: Luke 2:6-14

Key Verse: Luke 2:7
7  And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

Devotion:
Can you imagine the excitement, the build-up to this event, the party, the celebrations, the partying… No, there was no great party, no great gathering, no trumpets announcing the King; instead Jesus Christ was born to us as a humble man born in a stable and laid in a manger wrapped in swaddling clothes.

Our God, our King, our Saviour, our Everything came to earth and allowed Himself to be born in a stable, alone and humbled by the events of that day. Everyone was here for the census and the taxes, not to come and celebrate the birth of their King; very few people knew what was happening here on this day. Yes the angels were announcing this event in their own ways to the people that mattered around the country, but this event in this stable probably passed with very little celebration other than the praise from His earthly parents.

I can remember the moment when I first was able to hold my children in my hands, those very special gifts that God had allowed into my life. They are treasures to me that mean so much more than any gift man could bring to me. Life is a very special gift from God to us; not just living and breathing, but the life that God breathes into our souls that will continue to live on for all eternity – just because God gave it to us. Who are we to decide that we don’t need God!

I know that we do get carried away with Christmas and the celebration that goes on, the excitement as children gather up their presents and go absolutely bonkers! But none of this would be possible if God had not made it possible in the beginning. We would have none of this without Christ because we would be damned because of our sins against God. Instead God has given us the perfect gift to make sure that we too can live for eternity with Him. He has created us so that we can join Him! What Joy! What Love! What an Awesome God we have!

Points to Ponder:
Have you remembered God today?

Let us lift our praise today to our Glorious God in Heaven!
