November 3: Hebrews 3:12-13
Key Verse: Hebrews 3:13
but exhort one another daily, while it is called “Today,” lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.
Devotion:
What does it mean to not believe? I’m not asking what it means physically but rather what are the consequences for your own self if you chose not to believe in what the truth actually is. The consequences are not always thought about and certainly not considered in full by far too many.
We can look back on the people of Israel as they followed Moses through the desert and off toward the Promised Land. We can see how they have chosen their own path because of the decisions they make. We can see the consequences of what they are doing as they are doing it. We can almost shout out to them to stop, look and listen to what they are saying themselves. We can wonder why they could ever think anything other than how lucky they are to know God so closely.
And then we can look at the mark we make over Halloween with all the rubbish we let into our lives… Why do we even think about doing anything other than following Christ all the while? It’s got to be something along the line of, if it was so ornately made then we should look at it twice. We see the wonders of this universe all around us and even come up with the idea that they could not possibly come from anything other than a marvellous Creator God… but then we go out and create some dumb idol and start worshipping that!
The people must have known in their own hearts that they were working against God but they were too lazy to do anything about it until they had to face the music for what they did wrong. God does not want to punish us at all, but whilst we are in direct conflict with Him, we cannot hope to be able to do anything other than winding Him up! God is a God of love, but He knows that we must obey the rules in order to learn how to accept that love.
Points to Ponder:
Do you try to bride your way out of a problem?
Will you accept what Christ says?
