November 21: John 14:25-31

Key Verse: John 14:30
I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming, and he has nothing in Me

Devotion:
Yesterday we looked at how the evil one is going to try and catch us out at any opportunity. Today I want to encourage you again to remember that God is with you and you do not have to fight the battle alone. Yesterday the passage started out in Luke 4:1 with the reminder that Jesus was filled with the Holy Spirit. Today we are reminded by Jesus that we are filled with the Holy Spirit. We do not fight alone but with God in us!

Jesus was not over-wrought with pain, guilt and other ill feelings in the desert. Yes He had been without food for a long while and His body may well have been tired, but His spirit was not because He knew He could be comforted by God through the Holy Spirit. That sounds odd for us because we also know that Jesus, God and the Holy Spirit are one. But it also helps us to look at them as different to give us greater understanding of how God helps us in our own lives.

Jesus reminds us here that we will have the great comforter, the Holy Spirit, giving us moral, physical and spiritual support when we need it most of all. Just as Jesus needed it whilst in the desert, we need it in our everyday lives to face up to the evil one. And when we know our bibles better we will see just how much he is able to help us because we are relying on Him more.

If someone tells us something as a one off, we may not realise the gravity of what they are saying to us because it was a single statement. But the more we get to know about the situation, the more we understand and accept it as fact. The same goes for us and God’s Word. The more we are able to read, digest and understand it, the greater our faith will be because we know more of how God can and does help us. Jesus wants us to remember more because that allows us to depend on Him more as our Heavenly Father.

Points to Ponder:
How well do you read your bible?

Are you strengthened by those words?
