Thursday Reading: Mark 14:27-30

Key Verse: Mark 14:30
30  And Jesus said to him, Truly I say to you that today, in this night, before the cock crows twice, you shall deny Me three times.

Devotion:
How many times have you told someone that you will support them no matter what – only to find that when push comes to shove they have gone further than you thought possible and you do not support them? We like to think that we are all going to be able to support Christ wherever we go and we may well do a good job most of the time; but there comes a time when you buckle under peer pressure and you give in to the ways of the world instead. You know at that moment that you have let God down, but you try to convince yourself that what you are doing is actually ok.

God’s commandments were given to Moses in stone – does that not give us a hint that what He gave was actually supposed to last forever! We do tend to forget that we are still bound by those commandments even though Christ gave His life so that we could be forgiven for breaking them in the first place; but He wants us to remember that we have been given a chance to set things right and not to continue breaking the laws.

As we come up to Good Friday we need to remember that what we do every day still counts. Jesus died for our sins in the past, present and future. When we continue to sin we are being just like Peter and rejecting Christ on the day when He wanted it least! I cannot begin to imagine how Peter actually felt when the cock crowed and He realised just what he had done wrong; yes we do admit to our sins and some of them make us feel pretty bad, but actually seeing Christ go through what He did whilst you are doing wrong must have been a whole lot worse. We may not have to face Jesus as see Him go through what He did for our sins, but He did go through that because of our sins. Isn’t it time to turn back towards Him instead of turning your back on Him when things get a bit uncomfortable?

Points to Ponder:
What is the best thing anyone has ever given you?

What have you done to deserve it?
