December 2: Hebrews 13 20-21
Key Verse: Hebrews 13 21
equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
Devotion:
The Hebrew people had known the peace of God, or at least their ancestors had known that peace if they did not know it. The Hebrew culture mean that families kept the stories of old alive by telling them to the next generation; this is evident in them remembering what God had already done for them and this ne land they were living in because of the promises God made to the prophets and kings of old.
It is that same promise which brought Jesus Christ back to life after He had lain dead in the tomb. God promised a deliverance, and this was the outcome of that promise – Jesus rose from the dead to defeat death and the evil one. We have the outcome of that promise to look back on nowadays – an outcome we need to remember and one we need to tell from generation to generation, making sure everyone gets to hear of what has happened to God’s promises!
As long as we are willing to trust in Christ and follow His instructions, we should be able to do many good things, things He has asked of us and continues to ask of us. With our obedience comes a blessing directly from God whereby we can know that peace He has offered and promised us. When we obey Christ and fulfil His wishes for us, we are doing what pleases Him and He will reward us accordingly.
This is not just a way in which He can get us to do things – even Satan can get us to do things… This is a promise Christ has made to fulfil the promise God made in the beginning and what the Holy Spirit continues to enable in our lives when we do trust! The outcome of our work should be to give God the glory, not for what we do but for what He has already done and continues to do. This is a forever promise!
Points to Ponder:
Do you carry out your promises?
Will you trust the one who has carried out all His promises?
