Sunday Reading: Acts 7 54-60
Key Verse: Acts 7 54
54 When they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed on him with their teeth.
Devotion:
So many times I have looked at these verses and marvelled at the comfort that Stephen could have got from God to face this moment, but this morning as I was reading it the one thing that stuck out was the gnashing of teeth! What a picture that paints of the state of the men around Stephen! How many times do we read about the gnashing of teeth in our bibles and attribute it directly to fear and trembling, but the use of it here is slightly different in that the feeling is not so much fear for themselves as at anger against Stephen.
Many times in our Christian walk we are going to be faced by people who may well hit back at us or torment us just because we dare to stand up for Jesus. Many times we will make people angry just because we want to believe in the truth… Why does it have this adverse reaction? Because when we allow others to see Christ through us, they begin to feel undone themselves – but because they are seeing that through us, they lay blame on us instead of themselves. Why should they change their own view of the world when they can blame someone else and continue to hide in their own secret world?
Stephen was bold enough to stand up to the men around him and tell them that they were rejecting Christ through what they were doing; the fact that Jesus is The Christ that they were still seeking. That to them was too much because that would mean them giving up everything that they had built up around themselves and trusting in Jesus instead. When we build up securities around ourselves we find it very hard to give in and admit that what we have done may well not be the right thing!
Christ wants us to simply know the truth. That means that we have to put the world and all that we have built up in this world behind us. Yes it is a difficult step to take when we have done so much or accomplished so much, but being able to admit that Christ is Lord above all and to be able to trust fully in Him is the final step we must take. Once we have taken that step the Holy Spirit will continue to support and guide us for as long as we are willing to allow Him such pleasure. Yes it is a pleasure for Him because that is what our whole history in our bibles shows us! If God is doing this all for love, then ought we not to acknowledge that love right now?
Points to Ponder:
Do you ever admit you could be wrong?
Are you fighting God’s Word?
