Friday Reading: Luke 17 7-10

Key Verse: Luke 17 10
10  So likewise you, when you shall have done all the things commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants, for we have done what we ought to do.

Devotion:
Being a servant can be a thankless task and being a slave can be far far worse. We can only imagine the things that slaves have been through in the past because not all their woes are written down, after all, who would listen to a slave? That is just a sad reflection on society and the way that we are. But let us not get hung up in the wrongs about slavery but rather let us focus on our attitude towards being a servant.

When we start to work it may well feel like we are a servant because we tend to get all manner of strange things to do when we are in the most junior position. Things that may be nothing more than making tea for others or cleaning the dishes. How we go about that work will dictate how we feel whilst we are doing that work and what we get out of that work. If we are going to feel like slaves then by the time we get round to doing the work we will already feel down and afterwards we will feel like we have accomplished nothing! If we approach it in a more willing manner then we may well still feel a bit down during the work but will feel like we have achieved something (no matter how small) after it is done. It is your attitude towards the work that will dictate how much you get out of the work and how you cope with it.

Being a Christian is not all about praying and waiting for God to show you His Word. Being a Christian is about getting stuck in to do the things that God would want you to do. At home your parents would not always ask you to clean up even when it needs to be done, but by taking the initiative and cleaning up before being asked would please them no end! God certainly does not want to have to tell you want to do all the time because that would mean that you are just like a slave. We should be willing to go forward and Do our work for Him before He has to lay things on the line and tell us what to do. We should be willing to live for Him and with Him, always.

Points to Ponder:
How often do you do work at home?

How often do you have to be told what to do rather than doing it first?

Thursday Reading: Luke 17 3-6

Key Verse: Luke 17 5
5  And the apostles said to the Lord, Give us more faith.

Devotion:
How many times have you asked God to give you more faith? It is a sad thing that our faith wanes when it is tried. It is sad that we cannot stand on our faith through everything – but that is exactly what God has told us to do. He knows that we will grow weary and that our faith may well falter but He also knows that we do need support for that faith to continue. That is why He gives us the people we have around us. There are going to be times when we think that those around us are just not keeping their end of the bargain, when we think that those around us are not doing their fair share of things or are breaking our rules. Those are the times when they need us most.

God has given us the Christians around us that we may all be able to support each other, encourage each other and grow in Christ together. It is little wonder then that He says we should meet together to worship Him. The more that we can be encouraged by each other, the stronger our faith will become. Faith does not come through experience but rather through the Word of God (Romans 10 17). If we are able to share Gods Word with each other then we will grow strong together.

And yet we still turn to experience in order to have our faith strengthened. This is actually quite normal for us but it is not what God had in mind. God wants our faith to be based on His promises and not on what we have witnessed through what others have done. God wants our faith based on Him and Him alone. There will always be times when our faith is tried and tested and those are the time when we need to turn to God’s Word for the answer because He will answer us through His Word on anything that we care to take to Him. Don’t always expect and answer as soon as you pick up His Word because just maybe He wants you to learn a bit more before He gives you the answer!

Points to Ponder:
How often do you turn to God?

How often do you depend on His Word?

Wednesday 25 Aug 2010

Wednesday Reading: Mark 9 21-27

Key Verse: Mark 9 24
24  And immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, Lord, I believe. Help my unbelief.

Devotion:
There are times when we do think that we are good at what we do and times when we think we are pretty useless but all those times and thoughts are relative to some point. We know that we do not change that much and yet that is how we feel. We know that we do change because our lives are different today than they were a few years ago, maybe even yesterday! But throughout all of these changes we can keep a few constants in our lives, the most constant being God.

We may not look on Him as being constant. King David would write psalms about God being beside him and behind him and then sometimes he would be pleading to God because he thought that God had left him for a while. When we look back in our lives we will find that God has remained constant and we have been the ones that have changed. Our lives change, our feelings change, our circumstances change; but we can always depend on the Love of God remaining constant. We can always depend on Christ being our unmoveable rock upon which we can stand.

There are times in our lives when we do feel down and just want to be left alone. Those are the times when we need to cling to God and make sure that we do not leave ourselves open for just anything. When we do feel down we look to things close by for help and support. If we are not focused on God then what we let into our lives may not be what God wants in our lives. He is our guide but in order to be that guide we do have to listen to His instructions. We have to have faith in Him and in what He wants for each one of us. It is not good that we grow hot and cold with Christ all the time because that is like waiting for a kettle to boil as you switch it on and off constantly. We need to be constantly depending on our Rock. That is what God wants for us...

Points to Ponder:
Are you sometimes a Christian?

What would God be if He was only sometimes God?

Tuesday 24 Aug 2010

Tuesday Reading: Matthew 13 58

Key Verse: Matthew 13 58
58  And He did not do many mighty works there because of their unbelief.

Devotion:
Christ wants us to believe in Him. He wants us to be able to demonstrate our faith by trusting Him instead of our own wants and desires. Christ wants us to know what faith is, to know that faith is real and true. If we do not have faith then we are telling Christ that we do not believe all that He has done for us. Our being Christians means that we have had faith enough to believe that Christ died for our sins and that we need to ask Him to forgive us of those sins.

If we are calling ourselves Christians because of something that we have seen or because of something that we have said or that has been said to us, then we are sadly mistaken. Being a Christian means having faith in Christ, believing that what He has done was real and that we have His forgiveness when we ask for it. If we are basing our Christianity on what others have said or done for us then we are not in a personal relationship with Christ – we have not accepted the personal covenant that Christ wants to make with each one of us who is willing to believe in the unseen.

Christ was able to know when the people around Him did not have real faith and because of that He withheld His miracles. He did not want to have a bunch of people believing Him just because He was able to do miracles! How many times do we see Christ saying to the person He heals that they should not go and tell everyone about what has happened. The disciples even say that there are not enough books in the world to contain all the things that Christ did. Christ wants us to have faith and not just believe because we have seen a miracle! Christ wants us to know Him first so that we can get to love Him in a similar manner in which He loves us. When we have that love we can then understand just how much He has accomplished for us and believe that all the things He has said will come to pass! Christ wants us to have faith and not to just believe what we see.

Points to Ponder:
What does it take for you to believe something?

DO you need visible evidence before you believe in Christ?

Monday 23 Aug 2010

Monday Reading: Mark 6 1-6

Key Verse: Mark 6 4
4  But Jesus said to them, A prophet is not without honour, except in his native-place, and among his own kin, and in his own house.

Devotion:
Have you ever noticed that when you try to teach strangers about something they seem more willing to listen that your own family is? Your family seems to treat you with some sort of contempt rather than with the respect due a teacher of some kind. Although these words are only spoken by Jesus and not found in the Old Testament we can relate to them because we find it to be true. We seem to have no problem being able to teach strangers about the word of God when they are willing to listen, but the more we get to know people the less they are apt at sitting still and listening to His Word!

Christ continued to teach wherever He went no matter whether the people around Him were willing to listen or not. That is the attitude that we have to take as well – to go out there are preach to anyone that is willing to listen so that they may get to know God too. When strangers see that we know things they perceive us as being wise, but many times when family members see that we know things they try to trip us up or even mock us before we can teach them. A human saying that comes from that is familiarity breeds contempt; and how sadly it is true!

Therein lays a trap for each one of us – the more we get to know God the more we may be likely to treat His Word with contempt at times! We like to think that we know enough and that we don’t have to sit down and study His Word – how wrong can we be! God’s Word is just about the most important thing that we have because it is that that is more important than what we can see and what we can think. No matter how much we learn we must always know that His Word is the truth and we must base our lives on that and not on what other people say we should...

Points to Ponder:
Who do you find it hardest to teach anything?

How good a student are you to Christ?
