Thursday Reading: Ephesians 2 1-3

Key Verse: Ephesians 2 3
3  among whom we also had our way of life in times past, in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the thoughts, and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

Devotion:
Have you ever thought that someone else did not have the right to tell you what was wrong with what you were doing? Well do they or don’t they? We often think of our parents in the light in which we now see them now or in other words we see them for what they are now and not what they used to be. I know that there are still things that I continue to find out about my parents and their lives before I was around and I’m sure that my children do not know my full story yet :-) But as we continue to grow and live we learn more about the world around us and about God as well.

Before I became a Christian I was all over the place and I was very easily led away to do things which I would not dream of now. Just as I was able to fall into many temptations back then, you may well be falling into temptations and our parents were also guilty of a similar fate. Does this then give us the right to tell others what they are doing wrong? No. But it certainly gives us the experience to allow us to tell others of what we did wrong and hopefully show them that if they continue they will get into the same trouble as we did. Just because we are separated by a generation from our children and our parents does not mean that they are not going to be faced with similar issues. God allows things in our lives so that we can use those experiences to guide other people – and that we should be doing!

Christ is the one who has saved us from our sins. Christ is the only righteous one who is able to judge us but we are His people need to be able to share our experiences with others so that they will not fall into the same problems and traps that we did. It is not interfering when we are trying to save others from the same pitfalls as we once had – it is called love.

Points to Ponder:
Do you think your life is unique?

How many times has God seen people do what you do?

Wednesday 11 Aug 2010

Wednesday Reading: Acts 24 24-27

Key Verse: Acts 24 26
26  He also hoped that silver would be given him by Paul, that he might free him. Therefore he also frequently sent for him and talked with him.

Devotion:
One thing we all do is to get more tied up in our thoughts and our own ways instead of following God’s ways. We can never seem to let go of the world around us and focus on God until we find ourselves in a tight spot – then suddenly we seem to be able to focus on Him! But when we are enjoying a relaxed life or find ourselves being blessed with many things we far too often allow our minds to wonder off into other things instead of being focus on our God. Thankfully we have a patient God!

So what sort of things get our minds wondering? Well, it’s all of those things that we allow into our lives. It is the music, the books, the people, the worldly ways – all of those things are the things that pull us away from our daily walk with God. It’s the things in life that we take for normal and the things that we think are plain and ordinary. That is why we do have to sit down with God’s Word and focus on Him daily. That is why we have to take a step back from the world and focus on Him. How else are we going to be able to know what is right and wrong.

When we ‘act normally’ we find that there are all sorts of things in our lives that we do, say, take in and generally accept. But if we take a step backwards and take a look at it from someone else’s point of view then we often find that we do have things in our lives that should not be there! Felix was a man who was doing his own thing and I am sure that the times that he had with Paul must have sparked some thoughts in his mind. But because he was living the life that he was accustomed to, he expected things to continue on in that way – that is why he was waiting for a bride and that is why he went against his own judgement and left Paul in jail rather than doing the honest thing and releasing him. We need to take a step back and focus on God before we make too many mistakes too...

Points to Ponder:
What do you let into your life?

What do you think God thinks about your life?

Tuesday 10 Aug 2010

Tuesday Reading: Exodus 23 1-3

Key Verse: Exodus 23 2
2  You shall not follow a multitude to do evil. Neither shall you speak in a cause in order to follow many in order to wrest judgment.

Devotion:
It is so easy just to go with the majority so that you can fit in with them. It is so easy to turn a blind eye just to keep people happy. It is so easy to take sides with the weak or poor just to put down the strong or rich. But that has never been what God wanted in this world and it is certainly not what we should be doing. Right from the time when God saw that man was taking sides just to keep the majority happy He has continued to remind us that we should be seeking the truth and not just the majority.

We all remember the 9th commandment because we are taught it from an early age but as we are taught that we also observe those same people who teach us doing things which may surprise us. We have all been there ourselves, by telling people they should not do things only to go and bend the rules a few minutes or hours later to satisfy ourselves. Jesus’ description of people who did such was quite severe; ‘backbiters’ and ‘vipers’. Do we really think that we should be able to get away with that just because we think we are right?

God’s Word is the truth. He is Just and Holy. Nothing that we do can ever set what is right to be wrong and nothing that we do wrong, no matter how many times, will ever make it right! So just because we have done something wrong enough times to make it seem normal does not make it right. Just because society is turning a blind eye to certain things does not make those things right. God’s Law still stand and it will always stand. Trying to live a lie will simply not work when we have to face Christ. Living that lie may work for a while on earth but it stops here because no lies will ever be allowed into heaven. We need to uphold Christ’s Laws. We need to follow on in His Holy example. We need to be honest!

Points to Ponder:
How many times have you supported the weak instead of the right?

Are you still lying to yourself?

Monday 9 Aug 2010

Monday Reading: Romans 12 2

Key Verse: Romans 12 2
2  And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, in order to prove by you what is that good and pleasing and perfect will of God.

Devotion:
This is one of those verses that you hear a lot and probably cast aside because you have heard it so many time and think you know what people are going to say when they quote it. Well, that is just one of our problems... We get so used to hearing the same verses again that we start to switch off and think of other things when someone starts to talk about it – how wrong can we be!

God’s Word is something that we need to treasure and something that we need to continue to study. It is no good just recounting various verses and hoping that something will eventually stick because that is just the same as cramming before an exam – you learn enough to get through the exam and then promptly forget everything you have learned. That is not the attitude that we need to have with God because He knows what is going through your mind so fooling Him in any way is not an option. Cramming for an exam may well get you through school but it is not going to get you through heaven’s gates...

God wants each one of us to be honest with Him. It is not the fact that we try to hide things from Him but the simple fact that we cannot hide things from Him that we need to remember. We need to know that if we try to hide things we are just telling a lie to His face. That is the attitude that we have to get round; one that we seem to grow up with and learn from an early age. When we get to know Christ we must realise that we are no longer enslaved by the ways of the world, we have been set free from those lies and corruption. No longer do we have to conform to those ways because we now know that God knows all about those ways. We also know that it is Christ who wants to free us from those ways and is willing to teach and guide us all the way. Trusting in God means a whole lot more than just saying “I do”. Trusting in God means a daily humble and honest walk with Him.

Points to Ponder:
Are you still doing the same old things?

Will you let Christ set you free?

Sunday 8 Aug 2010

Sunday Reading: Psalms 19 11-14

Key Verse: Psalms 19 11
11  And Your servant is warned by them; in keeping them there is great reward.

Devotion:
God’s Word is there for a reason and that reason is clear to all who would venture into it and take it in. The message is plain and simple but so very difficult to follow until you get to know God and to know what He can do for you. Once we find out that we have done something wrong it is not always an easy task to not go ahead and do that same thing wrong again. Maybe the first time that we did it we were not sure whether it was wrong to begin with and maybe we just took a chance. But when we find out that it is or was wrong then doing it again seems to take on a new meaning – almost like someone daring us to do it again just because it is wrong.

God’s Word is here to guide us through times like that. Not only will it allow us to see what we do wrong but it will allow us to see where we go wrong in our ways and even in our minds too. God’s Word will show us exactly why we are called sinners and it will show us that even though we do try we do still fall short of the mark. But the most wonderful thing about God’s Word is that it is not here just to blame us but to guide us and to show us the way away from those faults and traps of sinful ways.

When we pick up a book that shows us how to get physically fit it will show us all manner of exercises that we should be doing and those exercises are not going to be easy to start with; but the more that we stick to them the more that we will find it gets easier and it is beneficial! Being physically fit starts with you changing your mindset to become fit otherwise it is all too much of a chore. Mending our ways with God requires a change in us, one that He is willing to do for us if we are willing to take that first step of obedience! God wants us to be good examples – that is why He gave us such a wonderful book...

Points to Ponder:
Are you ready to change?

Will you take God’s Word?
