Thursday Reading: 2 Kings 2 23-24

Key Verse: 2 Kings 2 24
24  And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the LORD. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them.

Devotion:
When I first heard these verses in the bible I was amazed that a prophet would do such a thing; but the more that you read through God’s word the more that you realise that God is the one who did not put up with people abusing His name. The prophet was a man whom God appointed to give the people His Word and to make sure that the people would listen to Him. If the prophet did not do what God wanted then what use would he be? Each of us has a purpose of God and each of us needs to find out what that purpose is.

In this case it could be said that it was the children and their parents who were at fault because they should have known better than to cross swords with God’s chosen prophet. They must have all known of the things that Elijah had done in God’s name by now and yet they still continued to ignore God’s awesome power – something that too many people are guilty of today. Just because we do not see prophets doing miracles in God’s name does not mean that God has not appointed people to work in His name. Jesus Christ came to earth and we still ignored Him – what good would a prophet do in His stead?

Not only do we need to obey God’s word ourselves but we need to try and encourage our families to do the same so that they do not get caught up in what seems to be horrible things. These children (the word children is used to describe people of up to thirty or forty years old – but they were children in God’s sight) were caught up in what seems to be a horrible natural disaster but what they had just done was to turn their backs on God. If we turn our backs on God then we have to be prepared to defend ourselves against the natural world instead of having God protect us...

Points to Ponder
:
Have you noticed how awesome nature is?

Do you want to trust nature or the God who created it?

Wednesday Reading: Malachi 1 10

Key Verse: Malachi 1 10
10  Who is there even among you that would shut the doors for nought? neither do ye kindle fire on mine altar for nought. I have no pleasure in you, saith the LORD of hosts, neither will I accept an offering at your hand.

Devotion:
Back in the time of David the king porters would be appointed to stand at the gates of the temple to check on the sacrifices that were brought in. God insisted on a good sacrifice being offered and not just any old rubbish but man was the one who would grow weary of the sacrifices and start to diminish their meaning. Today I want each of us to remember the importance of our own sacrifices to God. No longer are we required to bring in the best animal sacrifice that we have because of what Christ has already done for us in that respect. But that should never put away our own sacrifices that we should still be making.

I am not talking about the physical act of sacrificing animals but rather of the things that we are willing to give back to God. He is the one who has given us everything in the beginning so why should we even try to withhold anything back from Him. In the beginning He would ensure that the people willing to bring in a sacrifice would have some way of doing exactly that but what He demanded was the best from people. Cain found that out the hard way when he thought that he could bring in what he considered to be the best rather than what God considers to be the best.

Each of us is given so many blessing from God and it is those special blessings that we need to bring back to Him. He gives us the best so that we can give Him the best – anything else would be us withholding our best from Him. Why does it sound so simple and yet seem so difficult? The main reason for that is that most people are not willing to give their all to Christ. He has already given us His all by laying down His own life on the cross – how can we consider withholding anything back from Him? It is little wonder then that prophets were inspired to write down such words so that we would be reminded just how important our lives are to Christ. He has paid it all for us now we must show Him due respect and love...

Points to Ponder:
How do you show your love to others?

Have you showed God your love lately?

Tuesday Reading: Philippians 2 19-21

Key Verse: Philippians 2 21
21  For all seek their own, not the things which are of Jesus Christ.

Devotion:
How many times have we seen people put in charge only to abuse the position that they have been given? It seems like the world is in the charge of people who are only seeking their own fame and fortune rather than looking out for anyone else. We like to think that we would all look after others if we were ever put in charge of anything but we only have to look back into our early years for figure that we have been guilty of such things as well. I am sure that we have all been there and boasted that what we have is greater, bigger or better than what others have at some stage; this is us lifting up our own and seeking our own rather than others.

You may look at this as a normal human trait that we all look after our own to ensure that we survive – you know, survival of the fittest... If that were true then we most certainly would be in big trouble because we would have killed off the human race the day that it was created! God did not creaet us to lift ourselves up, He created us to grow up to love, obey and glorify Him. There is nothing glorious about ourselves when we come into God’s light. There is nothing praiseworthy of ourselves when we stand next to Christ. Why then should we think that we can lift ourselves up rather than the one who does deserve our praise?

The apostle knew that the Philippians were in a sad state because of their love for themselves rather than Christ. For this he wanted to send Timothy back to them to allow them to be strengthened and encouraged back into God’s will rather than man’s will. When we see our brothers or sisters struggling we should be willing to stand up and be counted for Christ. We should be willing to take on God’s role for each one of us and take His name forward. We cannot build up people because we ourselves are weak; but we can take God’s Word with us and that will do the strengthening, cleaning and convicting that is required. Lift His word up high. Lift His name on high. We are His servants.

Points to Ponder:
What do you lift up today?

Have you read God’s Word today?

Monday Reading: Philippians 1 21-26

Key Verse: Philippians 1 25
25  And having this confidence, I know that I shall remain and continue with you all, for your advancement and joy of faith,

Devotion:
It is often said that there are two things which are certain and those being death and taxes; I put it to you that at least two people have departed this earth without having to face death and we have seen taxmen giving back money so neither are absolutes. The only absolute that we have is that God loves us because that is the eternal truth. What we face here on earth is the fact that we do face death every day but how we face it depends on how we accept the absolute truth.

Matthew Henry describes the apostle’s choice here as being a choice between two good things and not two bad things. The way that earthly people look at it is that they face death which is bad or life which is could be good but is mostly bad. As a practicing Christian we face death which is most excellent because we finally get to be with our Lord and King! Our second choice is that we face life which is actually good because we have more time to work for Christ! As Christians we have nothing to be down about. Yes we will all face hardships and even have to face death, but as Christians we know what lies beyond death and it is not bad!

We should never be scared of death because Christ has already told us that that is the step towards eternal life with Him. That being said, we should not ignore it because as soon as we do die we can no longer work for Christ. It is a wonderful thing to be able to be accepted by Christ as a worker because then we know that we truly accepted as His children. Whilst there is still work to be done on this earth we should stand proud and be counted as His children and as His workers. We should look forward to the daily challenges that we will face with Him by our sides. Being alive is a very special gift from God and we should be using it for the best possible cause; spreading the gospel!

Points to Ponder:
What is special about your life?

Do you know how much God supports you?
