Tuesday Reading: James 1 12-18

Key Verse: James 1 17
17  Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness nor shadow of turning.

Devotion:
When things go wrong in our lives we always try to turn round and blame someone else, not always because we don’t like to accept responsibility but because we feel a whole lot better if we can blame someone else rather than taking on the blame ourselves. But when we turn round and start blaming God for things that go wrong in our world we are simply not thinking about what we are doing. That tends to happen most of the time when things do go wrong; we blame before we think! If we turn round and start blaming someone else or something else when we are the only thing that has changed then we are just not being logical!

The first thing to do when things go wrong is to look at what has actually changed. That is going to give us a pretty good idea of what has gone wrong to start with. If we look at our lives we will see that when things do go wrong in our lives it is mainly because we have done something different or we have changed something. I’m not saying that we stick to one thing and never change just because it works because we can always find better ways of doing things, but when we start with the best way then there is no better way. God’s ways are perfect and when we recognise that fact then we should have no problem with following His ways – especially when we see that they do work!

Our problem is that we always think that there could be a better way because we want there to be. Our temptation is then to go off hunting for some other way through which we do not have to stick to the rules! That then makes us wander off away from God and into sin. When we do that, how can we expect things to go right? But no matter how much we do this, Christ is always ready and willing to bring us back into the fold when we do admit that we have done something wrong. He wants us to have His perfect gift of eternal life even when we have done every conceivable thing wrong already! He created us to enjoy eternal life with Him.

Points to Ponder:
Who do you usually blame?

Do you know God is on your side?

Monday Reading: Hebrews 13 5-8

Key Verse: Hebrews 13 8
8  Jesus Christ the same yesterday and today and forever.

Devotion:
One of the most amazing things that you will find as you read through the bible is that God has not changed from the beginning right through to the end and nor will He change. Christ came forward to lay His life down on the cross for us and He continues to uphold that same truth every day of our lives. Each one of us can stand up and say “God loves me!” Each one of us can truly stand up and say “Christ died for me!” Each one of us can stand up and say that we have a God that is the same today as He was yesterday and that He will be the same tomorrow as well.

How many of us can say that about our leaders or any other part of our life for that matter. We live in a world where things seem to change quicker all the time. Children grown up expecting things to happen within hours instead of within days like we do or within weeks like our parents. Each generation seems to be caught in a spiral of ever quickening timescales; but none will be as quick as the return of our Lord. Nothing will be able to stop the return of our Lord and nothing will be able to predict it either.

We really do need to take a step back from our busy schedules and give time back to God. We need to shake off the trappings of this world and bring God back into our lives. Quite simply we need to learn to depend on God more. Our bibles remind us over and over again that God does not change and that He is willing and able to help us; and yet we continue to live our lives as though He were not part of us. We don’t have to regard what man can do against us because all he can do is destroy our bodies. God alone is the one who can liberate our souls and chain them up forever with Satan. We need to bring Christ back into our lives before we change too much...

Points to Ponder:
How do you think you have changed last year?

Has your attitude towards God changed yet?

Sunday 14 Feb 2010

Sunday Reading: Psalms 37 23-27

Key Verse: Psalms 37 23
23  The steps of a good man are ordered by Jehovah; and He delights in his way.

Devotion:
One thing you can be certain of is that Christ is going to look after His own people. Anyone who calls on the name of Christ as Lord and Saviour and believes in their heart that He rose again is one of His; and His forever. Christ will continue to lead such people who are willing to listen. He will continue to bless those that are willing to accept. He will continue to teach those who are willing to learn. God is faithful and just and will not go back on those promises!

This does not mean that good people will not fall down and be hurt because we all have our moments and we are all caught up in the world that we walk in; sometimes we get hurt when those around us get hurt. Sometimes we fall when those around are still walking. But every time that we do fall we have a God that is standing ready to pick us up and to carry us forward until we are able to walk with Him again. The longer we live the more that we see this happen in life; something that we don’t admit to when we are young because that would mean giving in to something! But Christ wants us to not only know that He is capable and willing, but that He is always there!

When people turn to God He will not turn away from them. When people call out for help in belief, He is there to pick them up and carry them. When we call on our God, He is willing, able and just to answer our prayers to the uttermost. So now is the time to lift up those prayers to our God. Now is the time to fully trust in Him and His name. Now is the time to realise what God can do for you when you give what already belongs to Him back to Him. God is waiting patiently for all of us to know Him. God is waiting patiently for all of us to depend on Him. God is waiting patiently to bless each and every one of us just because we love Him back.

:
Is there anyone special in your life?

How special is Jesus in your life?

Saturday Reading: Psalms 25 8-14

Key Verse: Psalms 25 14
14  The secret of The LORD is with those who fear Him; and He will show them His covenant.

Devotion:
Don’t you find it amazing that even though God knows what we get up to, what we think, what we say, even with all that knowledge He is still willing to try and teach us what is right and wrong. Just like our parents did not seem to give up on the lost causes we may have been – He will never give up on us! But, just like us and our parents, we have to be willing to sit down and listen before we can learn. It is no good ignoring God’s advice because we will never learn anything then! No matter which way we look at it, God’s ways are actually right. He does show us mercy. He does teach us the truth. So why are we not walking in all His ways?

We really do need to stand up and thank Him for all He does for us even though we turn our back on Him. We need to thank Him for allowing His only Son to die on the cross so that we would have forgiveness. It is that love that He showed us first that should encourage us to lift Him up and thank Him for all that He does in our lives. We are the ones who need to recognise that we are doing things wrong and we need Him in our lives to sort out those ways. Just like the children of Israel just before Moses died; they were plainly told that they had a choice between a good life with God and a bad life without Him. God still gave then the choice even though He knew they would turn their backs on Him and go after strange Gods.

As long as we are willing to recognise God for who He actually is and to lift up His name alone, we will be able to share in His rich blessings. It does not matter how much of a sinner we are now or how much we have been in the past, His love has covered it all. Our task is to come humbly before God and recognise Him alone as our one true God. Nothing is impossible for God.  The secret is in knowing who He is. Our God! He wants us to know Him and the promise He has given us.

Points to Ponder:
Do you think you need forgiveness?

Are you looking to God alone as God?

Friday 12 Feb 2010

Friday Reading: Deuteronomy 29 29

Key Verse: Deuteronomy 29 29
29  The secret things belong to Jehovah our God, but the revealed things belong to us and to our sons forever, so that we may do all the words of this Law.

Devotion:
There are things that we will never know because God alone is the one in charge of such things, but as soon as He wants to reveal them to us then we will be the ones that know. We do not know when Christ is going to return, but we will one day. We do not know what is going to happen to us tomorrow, but God knows right now, and we will know by tomorrow. When we have seen or experienced something those memories are then ours to keep for eternity, though as we grow older our brains do seem a might fickle and tend to put some things aside and then forget where we put them! But God never forgets.

When God was directing the Children of Israel in the desert and was preparing them for their final entry into the “land the flows with milk and honey” He wanted to make sure that there was no illusions about what He required from them. Our Old Testament is full of instructions in life for them to follow so that they could try to walk with Him. But as they found out, no matter how grave a warning they were given, trying to walk with God by yourself is an impossibility. He did give them ways of redeeming themselves but they too got forgotten because men did not want to admit to what they did wrong. There is nothing different today other than the fact that we now live in a time of grace.

God know just how rotten we can be and how much we can corrupt our world and our fellow people, and yet He was willing to give us a way of redeeming ourselves before we even got there! He knows what lies ahead, we have to wait until we have been there before we know. But the more that we do experience the more that we should be able to see what we do wrong – if only we knew the difference between that which is right and that which is wrong! But we do know, we just don’t like to admit to it otherwise we then have to believe in God. That is all He wants of us; to believe in Him.

Points to Ponder:
Do you know what God wants of you?

Do you know God’s Word enough to find the answers?
